Seeing Goa in Layers: Candolim, Benaulim & Palolem

Updated: Feb 15

Goa has unfolded for me in layers.

Not all at once.

Not loudly.

But gently, through people, pace, and presence.

Before I came, I’d seen Goa through other people’s eyes, through the stories of friends and travellers who had holidayed here before me, each one sharing how much they loved it and why. Being here now, what’s become so clear is the foundational beauty and warmth of the people, despite having so much less than we Westerners often think we need.

Each place I stayed offered a different lens.

Candolim: Energy, Connection, and Mornings Before the Rush

Candolim was vibrant and full of life.

As an early riser and non-drinker, I found my rhythm in the mornings, walking as the shops opened, watching people set up for the day, and chatting before the rush began. There’s something special about seeing a place before it fully wakes up.

Stopping at my regular coconut vendor on the beach, faces became familiar. Conversations moved beyond transactions and into stories, about families, pride, resilience, and hard work. Yes, people are there to make a living, but they’re also there to connect. To talk. To listen.

Candolim has energy, but it’s human energy. And there’s a real sense of safety that sits quietly underneath it all.

It was also where I spent time with my Mum; seeing Goa through her eyes, through a place she’s loved for over two decades. That alone made Candolim deeply special.

Benaulim: Ease, Rhythm, and a Way of Life

Benaulim was something else.

Quieter.

Softer.

More rooted in local life.

There was a calm, lived-in rhythm here, the kind that doesn’t perform itself for visitors. It felt less like a destination and more like a way of being.

I could easily imagine settling into life here. Walking the same routes. Being known rather than noticed.

Finding a daily rhythm that doesn’t need much, just familiarity, connection, and time.

Benaulim felt grounded and unassuming. A place where life happens without fuss, and where that feels enough.

Palolem: Presence, Creativity, and Perspective

Palolem brought a different pace entirely.

This was where presence really settled in.

The environment itself felt like an invitation to slow down, and I noticed how quiet my mind became.

My creativity flowed effortlessly. Thoughts landed without force. Reflections surfaced without noise.

I found myself watching how things work; the micro-operations of daily life in hotels, cafés, and beach shacks. The unseen coordination, the quiet hustle behind the scenes, and how it all comes together to create ease on the surface.

It reminded me how much we don’t see, and how much effort goes into making life feel seamless for others.

Palolem felt expansive, reflective, and grounding. A place that gently shifts your perspective without asking anything of you.

What Goa Has Shown Me

Across all three places, one thing has become clear:

Material things here do not bring joy, appreciation, or genuine warmth.

What does?

Connection.

Presence.

Simplicity.

People being people.

Watching others immersed in their holidays, present with the sun, the sea, each other, and even random cows just being cows, felt like a reminder of what being here actually means.

I’ve loved my time in Goa. It’s stayed with me in ways I didn’t anticipate.

A Little Take Away

What I’m taking home from Goa isn’t a checklist of places or experiences, but a quieter awareness, of pace, presence, and how little is actually needed to feel connected and alive.

This time away has gently reminded me that when the noise drops, clarity rises, and it’s often in those simpler, slower moments that we see life most clearly.

Goa — thank you for the mornings, the stories, and the gentle reminder that there’s more than one way to experience a place.
