The Feeling Isn’t Always About What’s In Front Of You

Have you ever found yourself feeling unsettled by something that, on the surface, doesn’t seem like a big deal?

A conversation.

A comment.

A situation that leaves you feeling uncomfortable, anxious, irritated, or insecure.

The feeling is real.

But sometimes the thing in front of us isn’t the thing we’re actually reacting to.

For years, I thought uncomfortable feelings meant there was a problem to solve.

If I felt anxious, I would look for the cause.

If I felt unsettled, I would analyse the situation.

If something didn’t feel right, I would replay conversations in my head and search for answers.

Sometimes for weeks.

Sometimes for months.

What I’ve come to understand is that while I could often identify the trigger, I didn’t always understand what the trigger was touching.

That’s where self-awareness changes everything.

The Trigger Is Not Always The Problem

Two people can experience the same situation and have completely different reactions.

Why?

Because we don’t just react to events.

We react to the meaning we attach to them.

A simple comment can activate an old belief.

A conversation can touch an old insecurity.

An innocent situation can wake up a story we’ve been carrying around for years.

The trigger happens in the present.

The feeling often has roots in the past.

This doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with us.

It simply means we’re human.

We all carry experiences, beliefs, memories, fears, hopes, and expectations.

Some serve us well.

Some quietly shape how we interpret the world without us even realising.

The Vision Tower

One of the reasons I created the Vision Tower framework was to help explain this process.

At the lower levels of awareness, we tend to focus only on what happened.

“That person said this.”

“This situation occurred.”

“That upset me.”

As we climb higher, we begin to notice something deeper.

We start asking:

“Why did that affect me?”

“What story did I create?”

“What belief was activated?”

“What is this really about?”

The event hasn’t changed.

The awareness has.

And awareness gives us choices.

Using The PIER Method

When I notice myself becoming emotionally activated, I use a simple process that helps me move from reaction to reflection.

P — Pause

Before creating a story, pause.

Notice the feeling.

Notice the emotion.

Notice the urge to react.

You don’t need to fix anything yet.

Just pause.

I — Inhale

Take a breath and gather information.

What actually happened?

What are the facts?

What assumptions am I making?

What am I telling myself about this situation?

This stage is about observation, not judgement.

E — Exhale

Create a little distance between the event and the story.

Ask yourself:

Is the feeling real?

Usually, yes.

Is the story automatically true?

Not always.

This is where many of our old maps begin to reveal themselves.

R — Realign

Choose how you want to respond.

Not from fear.

Not from habit.

Not from old programming.

But from awareness.

Sometimes nothing needs fixing.

Sometimes we simply need to recognise what’s happening and allow the feeling to pass.

The Goal Is Not To Stop Being Triggered

One of the biggest misconceptions about personal growth is the idea that we eventually become immune to uncomfortable emotions.

We don’t.

Triggers still happen.

Life still happens.

The difference is how quickly we recognise what’s happening.

Years ago, I could spend months sitting in anxiety without understanding why I felt the way I did.

Now, I can often trace a feeling back to a thought, a belief, or an old pattern much more quickly.

The trigger still appears.

The recovery becomes faster.

The understanding becomes deeper.

The suffering becomes shorter.

What Does It Mean To Have Your Life Together?

I sometimes wonder if there is anyone who truly has their life completely figured out.

The older I get, the more I think the answer is no.

Life continues to challenge us.

Old experiences continue to shape us.

Unexpected situations continue to stir emotions.

Perhaps having your life together isn’t about never feeling anxious, insecure, frustrated, or uncertain.

Perhaps it’s about knowing yourself well enough to understand what’s happening when you do.

Because when we understand ourselves, we stop fighting our feelings.

We become curious about them instead.

And curiosity is often where growth begins.

Awareness doesn’t remove every challenge.

But it does change what’s possible.

And sometimes, that’s enough.

Reflection

The next time you find yourself emotionally activated, ask yourself:

What happened?

What story am I telling myself about what happened?

And what might this be touching underneath?

You may discover that the feeling is real…

But the story isn’t always about what’s in front of you.

Awareness changes what’s possible, and it always starts with You.
