The Reaction You Don’t Notice Is the One Running Your Life

Most people think stress comes from the big stuff.

Work.

Relationships.

Money.

Life doing its thing.

But what if it’s not just that?

What if it’s the tiny little moments, the ones you don’t even notice?

You drop something,.

Spill your coffee.

Walk into the corner of something

Can’t find your keys.

And it’s instant…

“Oh for f* sake.”

Eye roll.

Tension.

Annoyance.

No thought. Just reaction.

Normal, right?

That’s what I thought too.

Until I really started noticing it.

Because those moments, they’re not nothing; they’re everything.

Every single one creates a little stress response in the body.

A spike of cortisol.

A hit of adrenaline.

And on their own? Fine.

But it’s not one, is it?

It’s loads of them.

Every single day.

So your body isn’t reacting to life, it’s living in a constant low-level stress state.

Not because your life is chaotic, but because your reactions are on autopilot.

Now let me just say this, because this bit matters…

This is NOT about toxic positivity.

I’m not saying “just be calm” or “don’t get annoyed.”

That’s not real life.

Big emotions? Of course they’re valid.

Frustration? Yes!

Anger? Also part of being human.

This is about the micro moments.

The ones that don’t need to carry that level of reaction, but do, because we’ve never questioned them.

Working in customer service, I saw it all the time.

People weren’t reacting to the actual problem, they were reacting to how it made them feel.

I saw it in myself, in the smallest ways.

That tiny split second after something happens, that’s the moment.

Because in that moment, you do have a choice.

Not about what just happened, but about what you do next.

Most people will say,

“I can’t help it, it just comes out.”

And honestly? I get that.

It feels automatic.

But if you can notice it, you can change it.

Not perfectly.

Not every time.

But enough.

Enough to shift how you feel throughout your day.

Now when something small happens, I still notice the reaction rise.

But instead of going with it, I pause.

Sometimes I laugh at myself.

Sometimes I say nothing.

Sometimes I just take a breath and carry on.

And do you know what’s changed?

Not the situation.

Me.

Everything feels a bit lighter.

Less tense.

Less reactive.

Awareness doesn’t change what happens.

But it completely changes how you experience it.

So here’s something simple to try today…

Just notice.

Not the big stuff.

The little things.

The sigh.

The eye roll.

The muttered comment.

That tiny flash of annoyance.

Don’t judge it.

Don’t try to fix it.

Just notice it.

Because that right there is your point of power.

And the more you notice it, the more choice you create.

Pause.

Inhale.

Exhale.

Realign.

Remember, it's all about You.
