The ROI of Your Choices: What Are You Really Investing In?

Every penny we spend is an investment, but what is the return on that investment?

I often hear people say things like, “You pay how much for a PT?” or “Gym memberships are too expensive.” I’ve also heard people say they wouldn’t spend that much on trainers or sportswear, or that buying fresh fruit and vegetables is just too pricy.
And yet, on the flip side, money often flows easily into alcohol, fast food, takeaways, or meals out.
Here’s the thought that landed with me.
Every penny we spend is an investment.
We usually think of investments as stocks, savings, or property, but the truth is that every single choice we make with our money is a form of investment in our future.
A takeaway might be an investment in convenience, sometimes with longer term trade-offs for our health. Alcohol can be an investment in a momentary escape, which may also come with its own cost if it becomes the norm.
On the other hand, fresh food, gym memberships, or sessions with a personal trainer are investments in our health, energy, and longevity.
The question isn’t whether we are investing, it’s what kind of return we’re getting from those investments.
When you put money into a savings account, you expect interest back. When you invest in your health, the return often shows up in different ways.
More energy.
Greater resilience.
Stronger immunity.
Clearer thinking.
Sometimes even more years of life to enjoy.
That’s a powerful return on investment.
Now here’s the important part. There is nothing “wrong” with any of these choices. Sometimes the takeaway, the glass of wine, or the night out is exactly what we want or need in that moment, and that’s perfectly okay.
The difference lies in awareness.
When we are intentional, we understand the trade-offs and we choose consciously. Sometimes we prioritise our long term health. Other times we allow ourselves short term joy.
Both are valid.
But when we begin to notice patterns, especially if the future starts to look different from what we would like, that may be the moment to pause and reassess the investments we are making.
Through this lens, the real question becomes,
Is the way I’m spending today creating the kind of future I want tomorrow?
Reflection question for you:
What’s one small choice you’ve made recently that feels like a meaningful investment in your future self?
Awareness changes what's possible and it always starts with You
