What Happens If I Keep Pretending I Don’t Have Time?

I’m struck by how often we tell ourselves we don’t have time.

No time to sit.

No time to think.

No time to prepare something nourishing.

No time to journal.

No time to breathe.

And honestly? I completely get it.

Life is busy.

Add children, work, housework, logistics, responsibilities, appointments, relationships and all the countless little day-to-day things that need your attention, and finding even half an hour can feel impossible.

I used to be exactly the same.

Everything felt important.

Most things felt urgent.

And if I’m honest, I used that as my excuse too.

Because when life gets noisy, taking time for yourself can feel indulgent, selfish even.

There’s this story so many of us tell ourselves:

“I can’t possibly take time for me right now.”

But what if we flipped that script?

What if we really acknowledged the impact of not taking that time?

Because that’s where survival mode quietly creeps in.

You keep going.

You keep showing up.

You keep ticking boxes.

You keep meeting everyone else’s needs.

But underneath?

You’re running on fumes.

And here’s the truth that can feel a bit uncomfortable:

If we’re not looking after ourselves, we’re not showing up in the way we could for the very responsibilities we care so much about.

It sounds backwards at first.

But how can we do our best when running on empty?

How patient are we when depleted?

How present are we when mentally overloaded?

How kind are we when we’re exhausted?

How well do we make decisions when our nervous system is permanently in go-mode?

This morning, I gave myself 45 minutes.

Warm lemon water.

Preparing and enjoying a nourishing breakfast.

Wonderful coffee.

Journaling.

A few quiet moments to simply be.

That was less than 4% of my day.

And it completely changed the remaining 96%.

During my journaling, I found myself digging a little deeper into something that had clearly been sitting quietly in the background.

Nothing dramatic.

Just something unresolved that needed space.

As the words landed on the paper, something shifted.

My heart felt lighter.

My mind felt clearer.

And I found myself wondering:

Was it lightness? Or uplift?

Maybe both.

Lightness because something had been released.

Uplift because energy returned.

That’s what intentional pauses can do.

This wasn’t “just breakfast.”

It was a tiny PIER Pocket.

A moment to Pause.

To Inhale nourishment, physically and emotionally.

To Exhale what no longer needed to be carried.

To Realign.

And no, it doesn’t always come easy.

Sometimes choosing yourself feels uncomfortable.

Sometimes it feels unfamiliar.

Sometimes it feels impossible.

But perhaps that’s exactly why it matters.

Refuelling isn’t optional.

Whatever refuelling looks like for you, movement, stillness, journaling, a walk, reading, coffee in silence, music, breathwork, laughter, connection…

It matters.

Not just for you.

For the people in your life too.

Because the best version of you doesn’t come from depletion.

It comes from nourishment.

So maybe the question isn’t:

“Do I have time?”

Maybe it’s:

“What happens if I keep pretending I don’t?”

✨ Awareness changes what’s possible, and it always starts with you.
